  • After watching all episodes of Transformers Prime: Season 1 on Bluray which included audio commentary, I took notes on some facts or occurrences I thought fans would find interesting. Bear in mind that this is not an exhaustive list of all information, just what I found personally relevant. Nothing I write here can substitute for purchasing and listening to the S1 bluray or DVD set for yourself, and I encourage you to do so. That being said, please enjoy this rather looooooonnnngggg posting.
  • Notes from the “Toy Feature and Making Of“ videos
  • The original layout for Season 1 sounds like it was more similar to TFA’s first season, with Megatron showing up at the end with and representing a huge threat. The plan had been to take a B or C list G1 character, probably Smokescreen, and characterise him as a super cool, charismatic, and awesome protagonist, only to have Megatron kill him before the season was over. Thus introducing Megatron as the guy who “kills everyone’s favourite character right off the bat”. However, the “death” was eventually moved to the first episode, to set the tone of the show instead. Smokescreen became Cliffjumper, Starscream became the murderer, and Megatron showed up in the second episode. To still create the idea that a main character was being killed however, the marketing team was instructed to put Cliffjumper on as many promotional art pieces as possible, the prequel comics focus on him, and he has a strong presence in the toy-line.
  • Hasbro representatives comment that adult men often tell them that Optimus essentially was their dad while they were growing up watching G1, due to not having a father or personal family issues. As such, there was a big effort in TFP to create an Optimus as a father-figure worthy of so many hundreds of men.
  • Related to that, they remark that Optimus never uses contractions when he speaks, and that he always attempts diplomacy first, and tries to appeal to peoples’ better nature. See his behaviour towards Skyquake, Starscream, and even Unicron as the season progresses.
  • General notes from the S1 commentaries overall
  • Even the production staff is surprised by the level of violence they get away with.
  • They pull a Cowboy Bebop card (they don’t reference the anime personally, this is just me noting the similarities) and state that they want each “regular” episode to feel like a stand-alone movie.
  • Everyone is consistently amazed by the work Polygon Studios in Japan does on the animation.
  • They often remark that they want older fans to feel acknowledged and entertained by TFP, but they also acknowledge that TFP will be “A G1” for many kids. It must be accessible to a new audience as well.
  • The presence of female characters within the show and the voice of women within the production staff was very important to this show. They often point out they wanted to get away from making a show that was aimed squarely at what a young boy would like, and tried to appeal to a broader audience.
  • Wheeljack was originally slated to return in S1. It isn’t super clear, but it sounds like they were going to have Wheeljack discover that Starscream was the one who killed Cliffjumper. This was deemed not really thematically satisfying, and the premise was restructured to take it back to Arcee, thus giving us “Partners”. Wheeljack, however, WILL return in S2.

From Darkness Rising 1-5
  • Miko’s resemblance to her voice actress, Tania Gunadi, both in terms of looks and personality is purely accidental. Miko’s design was finalized months before Tania was hired. But everyone was pleasantly surprised by their similarities.
  • Miko’s poor drawing skills are intentional. The production staff mentioned they were tired of seeing that whenever a kid in a cartoon pulls out a sketch pad, they always produce really good looking art. Even in the absence of skill, Miko still draws for fun anyways; it’s a very Miko thing to do.
  • Agent Fowler went through a great deal of design changes. They gravitated between him being super buff to grossly overweight before settling on the “realistic aging look”.
  • Speaking of Fowler, part of his back-story which doesn’t really get explicitly stated in show is that he used to be a lot more involved with the Pentagon/The Military when he was younger. Given his rather… abrasive personality, he was given the Autobot assignment so that the government could kill two birds with one stone: have someone babysit the Autobots, and give an old dog something to bark at.
  • Starscream is often described as a Iago-like character, and the relationship between him and Megatron is said to be“Shakespearian”… Make of that what you will.
  • Lopez (character designer says) “No! Starscream is not wearing high heels!”
  • Lopez also notes he was worried, because Starscream was such a departure from his G1 look. He was told to emulate a snake, so he drew a big cobra, and then drew Starscream over-top.
  • Miko’s attitude is indeed meant to emulate that of an exuberant young fan of action/sci-fi cartoons. She always wants to be an active member of the action, even though the reality of the situation technically doesn’t allow for it.

From Master and Student

  • They note that Starscream wants to be the ultimate evil, “but he’s just so BAD at it!”. Yes, the Invader Zim Gaz-style inflection is used.
  • Bumblebee’s murder of Skyquake is intended to be a shocking for its violence factor, and BB gets several moments of these in the first season, but its also noted that what Bumblebee really wants is to “be an Optimus someday”.
  • Soundwave was originally intended to be a “creepy van”, like a government surveillance vehicle. But they had to stick to a design principle that all the upper level Decepticons were fliers.

From Scrapheap

  • Everybody coos over how cute Raf is pretty much the whole episode.
  • Something they worry that maybe wasn’t super well communicated in Darkness Rising was that the kids are supposed to be somewhat socially isolated. There are not a lot of young people in Jasper and the kids don’t have a lot of friends, thus giving them a rationale for spending almost all their free-time with the Autobots.
  • The phrase “Optimus knows best” is used.

From Convoy

  • It seems Peter Cullen gets along with Raf’s voice actor very well. Aw…. But he’s a little scared of Clancy Brown due to Mr. Brown’s performance in “The Shawshank Redemption”.

From Predatory

  • This episode went through a great deal of storyboard revisions in order for it to best capture the “horror movie” style it carries.
  • Tailgate’s animation model is comprised of Cliffjumper’s body, with an altered head. And he’s voiced by Josh Keaton (Jack). Josh notes that he tried to present Tailgate as sounding like what “an adult Jack” would sound like, thus also highlighting Arcee’s fear of losing Jack twice, and having already symbolically lost Cliffjumper twice too.
  • Gina Torres apparently is incredibly scary when voicing Airachnid.
  • Sumalee (Arcee’s voice actress) and Josh apparently became great friends after recording this episode. Aw.

From Shadowzone

  • Andy Pessoa (Raf’s voice actor) mentions that “Scrap Heap” is his favourite episode, because it reminds him of Dead Space and he loves videogames.
  • The animation of Zombie!Skyquake took a lot of fine tuning to strike the right balance of lumber giant and something scary for the kids to run from.
  • This episode’s commentary is a little strange… They’ve got “Bumblebee” in the studio with them.. that is to say, every now and then someone will ask BB a question, and we get an unintelligible “BeeeOOPPPbSSSZZZbop!” in response.

From Stronger Faster

  • Indeed, this episode is named as a “Very Special Episode” about steroids. But they say this in a joking way. They mention its really more about seeing what Ratchet would be like as a young, more field oriented solider.
  • The production staff notes that Ratchet probably loves Optimus the most. Yes, they use the word “love” specifically.
  • Speaking to that, they wanted to emphasize that Ratchet had a good point. TFP Optimus is characterised by not using violence to solve problems, he’s a person who relies on his principles and ideals almost until the end, regardless of practicality.
  • The fight scene between Ratchet and Megatron was originally much longer, but the sсript ran long and it got cut.
  • The green glow of the Synthetic Energon is indeed a shout-out to the Re-animator film series.
  • When Ratchet hits on Arcee, they say “he needs to be wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket here!”
  • Knockout is a favourite amongst the writing staff as well. They also note “Everything is about Knockout, according to Knockout.”
  • Optimus is the one to heal Ratchet at the end of the episode. The staff mentions that Optimus has a fair amount of medical knowledge “because he is bookish!”
  • Just a side note, Jeffery Combs gets really into watching Ratchet fight during the episode. Yelling things like “Yeah Ratchet! Rip is head off! Stick it up his… poop hole.” He also yells “I needed that” at the end of the commentary.

From One Shall Fall

  • Apparently, the original plan was to have episode 23 be the season 1 finale… sort of. The deal was that 23 would air in spring of 2011, and then 24-26 would air as a “Summer Special” to truly finish S1 off. This ultimately fell through.
  • This story overall went through some major revisions too. The original concept was that Megatron would have tried to kill all three kids specifically, forcing Optimus’ hand into action. It was eventually shortened just to Raf.
  • When Raf got infected with Dark Energon, the original plan was for him to start literally transforming into a robot-zombie! Not only that, but the infection would have left Raf with a psychic link to Unicron which would have remained until Unicron went back to sleep. This was eventually deemed too creepy. Also, the story ultimately had to be about Optimus and Megatron, so Megatron got the mental link with Unicron instead and Raf gets healed right off the bat.
  • They make a big point of saying it takes a lot to motivate Optimus to get so violent with Megatron, or anyone for that matter, threatening a kid to such an extreme is the only real way to do this.
  • There’s a term in scripting called the “I’m Not Dead Moment”. Its where a character who has been hurt or knocked-out twitches or moans, to let the audience know that they’re still alive. When Raf gets shot by Megatron, he doesn’t move or make a sound. So, they were surprised to get away with that. However, Optimus’ line “Do not believe everything you read” got a note back on it from the censors. They were concerned Optimus was implying that children shouldn’t read books.

From One Shall Rise 1-3

  • There are some hilarious lines from the writers in these episodes
  • When Miko makes her unicorn/Unicron joke, they say “Wouldn’t it be great if Twilight Sparkle came out of that volcano?”
  • When June is taking Raf away “She’s not wearing her heels for Optimus right now, eh?”
  • When June and Raf are getting caught in the tornado “They need the Rescue Bots!”
  • Unicron’s voice actor, John Noble, was originally slated to voice Ratchet. But scheduling wouldn’t have worked out.
  • These episodes were in production when the tsunami hit Japan. As such, the matte paintings were mostly done in the American studios by their staff artists, usually it’d have been done overseas.
  • They note that Hasbro is very protective of Optimus and the morality he embodies. As such, they mention how surprised they were to be allowed to do a story-line wherein Optimus joins the Decepticons, even briefly.

Thank you for reading. Keep an eye on this post, as I will probably add more to it later as I re-watch episodes. Remember to show your support to the show by buying the toys, season 1 boxset, and season 1 soundtrack. If you have any specific questions, or would like me to elaborate on something, don’t hesitate to send me a message about it and I’ll see what I can do.
